About the museum
In 1814, retired naval ensign Alexander Khrushchev purchased a property on Prechistenka Street that had been damaged in the fire of 1812. On the ruined site, architects Domenico Gilardi and Alexander Grigoryev built an imposing Empire-style mansion with columns, stucco decoration and reception rooms. The Khrushchev family was known for its hospitality: balls, dinners and parties were frequently held here and attended by Moscow's nobility. There is no evidence that Pushkin himself visited the mansion, but he may well have been invited by hosts who welcomed ‘everyone in Moscow’.

In the mid-19th century, the mansion changed owners several times. It was first purchased by the Rudakov family of tea merchants and later by the noble Seleznyov family. After the Revolution, it housed various institutions. In 1949, a major exhibition marking the 150th anniversary of Pushkin's birth was held here. In 1957, the mansion was transferred to the A. S. Pushkin State Museum. Today, it is the main building of the museum complex and houses the permanent exhibition ‘Pushkin and His Era’. The mansion is an outstanding example of Moscow's Empire style and has been carefully preserved for future generations.
